I think I’ve always heard music in the OR even when I was in training or a medical student. It just seemed normal…even the Marvel character Dr. Strange listened to music in his OR. The use of music in the operating room (OR) has been a subject of interest for both medical professionals and the general public. We often listen to music during surgery, and the choice of music can significantly impact the mood in the OR.

I have heard every genre of music in the OR, but I seemed to prefer classic rock. Although growing up listening to R&B, Motown and Hip-hop, I found that it was easier for me to concentrate on the surgery if I wasn’t trying to sing along with the music. So I began to listen to classic rock, mostly music from the mid-60’s to late-70’s or early-80’s, which I knew little about. I want to talk about some of the reasons we listen to music during surgery.

Surgeons and Music: A Historical Perspective

The practice of playing music during surgery has a rich historical background. From ancient civilizations to modern times, music has been used to alleviate stress, enhance concentration, and create a more pleasant environment in the OR. Surgeons often listen to music during surgery for several reasons. For me and likely for others it improves focus and performance of the surgeon and the surgical team and the experience of the patient.

The Impact of Music Genres

The influence of music genres on the surgical environment is a topic of interest. Most surgeons agree that music should be played in the OR. Most agree the genre of music sets a tone for the day. Classical, jazz, or ambient music with lower tones, can help set a calmer mood, raise focus levels, and reduce stress and anxiety for both the surgical team and the patients. Furthermore, surgeon-selected music can be beneficial during specific stages of surgery, improving task focus and enhancing surgical performance. Some surgeons even change the genre or speed of the music during different stages of a surgery or procedure.

Thinking Out Loud…

I’ve found the use of music in the operating room is deeply rooted in its ability to enhance the surgical experience for both the surgical team and our patients. The choice of music genre can contribute to a more focused and relaxed atmosphere in the OR. The overall impact of music on the surgical environment is overwhelmingly positive. So, the next time you hear about surgeons listening to music during surgery, remember that it's not just for entertainment – it's a practice that can elevate the surgical experience for everyone involved.

If you’re a surgeon let me know what you listen to during your surgeries….
